Funny story.. Dog Training Help began when I transitioned from assisting and covering for a Nationally accredited dog trainer, to running classes myself.
I didn't plan to become a professional dog trainer, despite my interest in animal training - I had a conservation education business to run!
Then one of my mentors moved to Tasmannia! I had a few years' experience and education to allow me to carry on with confidence, on a part time basis to begin.
Dog Training Help became my "full time gig" in 2016, when I retired from my conservation education business.
Having worked with and trained wild birds, and having a science background, reward-based, fear-free training systems are my choice.
We supporting you and others in our community who aspire to have brilliant companion dogs.
I'm here to support you in navigating through your challenges, as you educate your dream dogs, using fear free training.

I offer training and socialisation classes for all ages and breeds of dogs. I pride myself on Puppy and Dog Social classes that are both fun and informative.
Dog Training Help has a unique, full featured fear-free snake avoidance and safety training program.
Our emphasis is on quality training that does not compromise your dog's psychological well-being.
You deserve a great foundation for doing great things together. After all, your dog is part of your family.
Good animal training transcends species. I have extensive experience with wild birds. I've had domestic birds, cats and even dabbled with a horse or two. And I've worked with LOTS of humans.
My professional learning is not just dog centred. The cross-pollination of ideas that comes from a huge variety of animals and situations helps to "think outside the box" so that our training is client centred, no matter what species.
This means that if your household is multi-species, your "others" can be included in any behaviour change efforts!

My background includes being a forensic engineer's assistant, proofing accident investigation reports for my Dad. This has given me a proactive, safety first attitude to caring for animals! My Degree in biology has allowed me to look into and understand neuroscience and training research.
I was a conservation educator for 25 years, and a wildlife rehabilitator specialising in training birds of prey for rehabilitation after injury. This helped grow my skills in communication and was a great animal training foundation.
When I got my first "own" dog I experienced the distress of watching "dog reactivity" unfold in my pup, while professional trainers failed to help us move past the issue. My girl also brought me the joy of training a champion tracking / mantrailing dog, and living with a wonderful, well behaved, loving companion.
I have since attended many animal training related seminars, workshops, conferences, joined professional organisations and read many books. I love to learn more, every day. I am currently assisted by two awesome dogs, 5 Muscovy ducks and two geriatric, retired ambassadorial raptors.

I teach and use "clicker training" and focus on Positive Reinforcement as the driver of training. If you want to reward your dog into being good, this is the best training method to adopt. This is the same system that is used in zoos and aquariums and by many professional dog handlers.
Reward based training with markers is highly effective in removing unwanted behaviour without damaging your dog's other, good behaviour. This is not the same as "purely positive" (whatever that is). Dogs learn that behaviour you don't want will not get them what they desire. We always give them a better alternative.
This IS fear free training, but it isn't force free - we use leashes to make dogs stay with us. We pick dogs up if we need to move them, and when treatment is needed, we immobilise them and do what needs to be done for their care. But before that happens, we use reward training to teach your dog cooperative care skills so that they can be held etc without fear.
If you have used traditional or "balanced" dog training in the past, I am happy to work with you. I do not allow the use of pinch, prong, choke / slip or electric training collars in group sessions. These can be highly effective when used by a professional level trainer, but often cause severe problems in the hands of badly educated people. There is no shouting, hissing, making loud noises or striking during training. I believe that fear, pain and intimidation have no place in a setting that is geared towards learning.
My training is inspired by and compatible with these well known and awesome trainers (in no particular order):
Karen Pryor, Ken Ramirez, Ian Dunbar, Leslie McDevitt, Grisha Stewart, Emily Larlham (Kikopup), Susan Garrett, Terry Ryan, Shirley M. Chong, Bob Bailey, Susan Friedman, Steve Martin.. and so many more!
